Pelican vs SKB Cases: Which Brand Wins?

by CutMyCase

Two American Case Giants

Pelican and SKB are both California-based manufacturers with decades of experience. Pelican started in the dive industry, SKB in the music industry. Today both serve a wide range of professionals, but their roots still influence their product lines.

Construction

Pelican uses HPX and HPX2 resin — proprietary polymer blends designed for impact resistance. The cases feel dense and solid.

SKB uses ultra-high-strength copolymer polypropylene. It's slightly more flexible than Pelican's resin, which can be an advantage for absorbing impact energy.

Both materials exceed military specifications for impact and drop testing.

Latches

Pelican's double-throw latches are robust and secure but require two hands to open quickly. The stainless steel pins are strong but can corrode in marine environments.

SKB's trigger-release latches are the easiest to operate in the industry. One-hand operation is genuinely easy, making them ideal for fast access in the field.

Winner: SKB for ease of use. Pelican for perceived robustness.

Waterproofing

Both brands offer IP67 rated cases with O-ring gaskets and pressure equalization valves. In practical terms, waterproofing performance is equivalent.

Size Range

Pelican has the edge in total number of models, especially at the extremes — very small micro cases and very large transport containers. SKB covers the most popular sizes well but has fewer niche options.

For specialty applications, SKB has a much stronger lineup in:

  • Guitar and instrument cases
  • Rack-mount cases for audio and IT equipment
  • Custom-molded cases for specific equipment

Price

SKB cases run 10-20% less than equivalent Pelican Protector models. When you factor in that many SKB cases include layered foam (versus Pelican's pick-and-pluck), the value proposition improves further.

Warranty

Both offer lifetime warranties covering manufacturing defects. In practice, both companies have good reputations for honoring warranty claims.

Weight

At comparable sizes, SKB cases tend to be slightly lighter than Pelican Protector cases but heavier than Pelican Air cases.

Specialty Cases

SKB Wins For:

  • Musicians — guitar cases, keyboard cases, drum hardware cases
  • Audio professionals — rack cases with shock-mount rails
  • IT/telecom — server transport cases

Pelican Wins For:

  • Military/government — deeper catalog of MIL-SPEC options
  • Marine — better corrosion resistance options
  • Travel — the Air series has no direct SKB equivalent

The Bottom Line

If you're a musician or audio professional, SKB's specialty cases are hard to beat. For general-purpose protection, both brands deliver excellent results. SKB often provides better value, while Pelican offers more options and the lightweight Air series.
