Pelican vs Nanuk: Which Case Brand Is Better?
Two Premium Brands, One Decision
Pelican and Nanuk are the two most recommended hard case brands among professionals. Both offer military-grade protection, waterproofing, and lifetime warranties. But they differ in meaningful ways that might make one a better fit for your needs.
Build Material
Pelican uses a proprietary polymer blend called HPX (High Performance Resin) for their Protector series and HPX2 for the lighter Air series. The material is proven across decades of military, law enforcement, and industrial use.
Nanuk uses NK-7 resin, a proprietary polycarbonate blend. It's slightly lighter than Pelican's HPX at comparable sizes and performs well in extreme temperature ranges from -20F to 140F.
Winner: Tie. Both materials are excellent. NK-7 has a slight edge in cold weather flexibility.
Latch System
Pelican uses traditional double-throw latches with stainless steel hardware. They're strong and reliable but can corrode in marine environments and require more force to open.
Nanuk uses the PowerClaw system — latches molded directly into the case body with no metal hardware. Zero corrosion risk and more even seal pressure.
Winner: Nanuk. The integrated latch design is a genuine engineering advantage.
Waterproofing
Both brands rate their cases to IP67 (submersible to 1 meter for 30 minutes). Both use a neoprene O-ring gasket. Both include an automatic pressure equalization valve.
Winner: Tie.
Size Range
Pelican offers the widest range of any case manufacturer — from micro cases that fit in a pocket to massive transport containers for military equipment. The Protector, Air, Storm, and Vault lines cover every size imaginable.
Nanuk has a solid lineup from the compact 903 to the large 965, but fewer total models than Pelican.
Winner: Pelican, simply due to more options.
Weight
The Pelican Air series was designed specifically to be lighter — up to 40% less than the Protector series. Nanuk cases fall between Pelican Protector and Air in weight.
Winner: Pelican Air for weight-sensitive applications. Standard Pelican Protector cases are heavier than comparable Nanuk models.
Price
Nanuk cases are generally priced 5-15% lower than equivalent Pelican Protector models. Pelican Vault cases (the budget line) undercut both but sacrifice some build quality.
Winner: Nanuk for value in the premium segment.
Warranty
Both offer a lifetime warranty. Pelican's covers the case shell and components. Nanuk's covers everything including latches and handles with no questions asked.
Winner: Nanuk, slightly — their warranty is more straightforward.
Included Accessories
Many Nanuk models ship with padded dividers included. Pelican usually includes pick-and-pluck foam but charges extra for dividers.
Winner: Nanuk.
The Verdict
If you want the widest selection and maximum brand recognition, go with Pelican. If you want the best latch system, better value, and included accessories, choose Nanuk. Either way, you're getting excellent protection.
And regardless of which brand you choose, CutMyCase can design and cut custom foam for both Pelican and Nanuk cases.
