Pelican Air vs Pelican Protector: Which Line Should You Choose?

by CutMyCase

Two Lines, One Brand

Pelican offers two main hard case lines: the classic Protector series and the newer Air series. Both carry the Pelican name and lifetime warranty, but they serve different priorities.

Pelican Protector Series

The Protector line is Pelican's original and most proven product. These cases have been protecting military, law enforcement, and industrial equipment for over 40 years.

Protector Characteristics

  • Material: HPX high-performance resin — thick, heavy-duty
  • Weight: Heavier than Air at comparable sizes
  • Wall thickness: Thicker walls provide maximum impact protection
  • Price: Mid-range in Pelican's lineup
  • Track record: Decades of proven field performance

Best Protector Models

  • Pelican 1200 — smallest Protector, great for single handguns
  • Pelican 1450 — versatile mid-size for cameras or instruments
  • Pelican 1550 — popular for DSLR kits
  • Pelican 1600 — the classic all-purpose case
  • Pelican 1650 — large format with wheels

Pelican Air Series

Launched in 2017, the Air series uses HPX2 resin that's significantly lighter while maintaining the same IP67 waterproof rating.

Air Characteristics

  • Material: HPX2 resin — engineered for weight reduction
  • Weight: Up to 40% lighter than equivalent Protector cases
  • Wall thickness: Thinner walls, still meets military specs
  • Price: 15-25% more than equivalent Protector models
  • Press-and-pull latches: Updated latch design

Best Air Models

  • Pelican Air 1485 — lightweight mid-size
  • Pelican Air 1535 — carry-on compliant, the travel favorite
  • Pelican Air 1557 — deep case for tall equipment
  • Pelican Air 1615 — large format, replaces the 1610
  • Pelican Air 1637 — deep large format with wheels

Head-to-Head Comparison

Weight

The Air series wins clearly. The Air 1535 weighs 8.4 lbs versus the Protector 1510 at 13.4 lbs. That's 5 lbs saved — significant when you're carrying a case through airports or loading vehicles.

Durability

Protector cases are built like tanks. The thicker walls absorb more energy on impact and resist puncture better. For industrial or military use where cases get thrown, dropped, or stacked heavily, Protector is the safer choice.

Air cases meet the same MIL-STD certifications, but the thinner walls have less margin. For general professional use, Air cases are plenty durable. For extreme abuse, Protector has the edge.

Interior Space

Because Air cases have thinner walls, they offer slightly more interior volume relative to their exterior size. This means you can fit the same gear in a slightly smaller Air case.

Price

Protector cases are more affordable. If weight isn't a primary concern, the Protector series offers better value.

Latches

Protector uses traditional double-throw latches. Air uses press-and-pull latches that are easier to operate but feel less substantial to some users. Both lock the case securely.

Decision Framework

Choose Protector if:

  • Maximum impact protection is your priority
  • The case stays in a vehicle or on a shelf most of the time
  • Budget is a factor
  • You're in industrial, military, or heavy-use environments

Choose Air if:

  • You carry the case frequently (travel, field work)
  • Weight matters for airline travel or long carries
  • You want more interior space in a smaller footprint
  • You prefer the updated latch design
