Pelican Vault Cases: Pelican Quality at a Budget Price?

by CutMyCase

Pelican's Answer to Budget Competition

With Apache, Condition 1, and other budget brands eating into the entry-level market, Pelican launched the Vault line. These cases carry the Pelican name at 40-50% less than the Protector series.

But what did Pelican sacrifice to hit those price points?

The Vault Lineup

V100 (Small)

Interior: 8.3 x 6.5 x 3.5 inches. Comparable to the Pelican 1120/1150. Good for compact pistols, GoPros, and small electronics.

V200 (Medium)

Interior: 12.4 x 8.7 x 5 inches. Comparable to the Pelican 1400/1450. The versatile mid-size option.

V300 (Large)

Interior: 16.2 x 11.5 x 6.1 inches. Comparable to the Pelican 1500/1550. Handles DSLR kits and larger setups.

V525 (Deep)

Interior: 14.1 x 7.6 x 5.1 inches. A narrower, deeper case for specific equipment shapes.

V700 (Takedown/Rifle)

Interior: 36 x 14 x 6 inches. A rifle case at a Vault price point. Wheeled for transport.

V730 (Long Rifle)

Interior: 44 x 16 x 6.5 inches. The full-length rifle option with wheels.

What's Different From Protector

Material

Vault cases use a different polymer blend than the Protector's HPX resin. It's slightly less impact-resistant but still adequate for normal use. The material feels lighter and slightly less rigid.

Latches

Vault uses push-button latches instead of the Protector's double-throw latches. They're easier to open but don't provide the same level of latch security. They also lack the tactile "locked" feedback of the Protector latches.

Waterproofing

Vault cases are rated IP67 — same as Protector. The seal gasket appears identical. For waterproofing, there's no compromise.

Handles

Vault handles are smaller and less cushioned than Protector handles. Noticeable when carrying heavy loads.

Foam

Vault ships with pick-and-pluck foam, same as Protector. Foam quality and density appear comparable.

Warranty

Same lifetime warranty as the Protector series. Pelican stands behind the Vault line equally.

Vault vs. Protector: Honest Assessment

The Vault is roughly 75-80% of the Protector's quality at 50-60% of the price. The waterproofing is identical. The durability is slightly lower but more than adequate for most users. The biggest trade-off is the latch system — functional but less confidence-inspiring.

Vault vs. Apache

The Vault is a significant step up from Apache:

  • IP67 vs IP65
  • Better latches and hardware
  • Pelican warranty
  • Better material consistency

At roughly 50% more cost than Apache, the Vault offers meaningful improvements.

Vault vs. Condition 1

These compete directly on price and features. Build quality is similar, with Pelican's brand reputation and warranty giving the Vault a slight edge in buyer confidence.

Who Should Buy Vault?

The Vault is ideal for buyers who want the Pelican name and warranty without the Protector price:

  • Hobbyists upgrading from Apache or Condition 1
  • Budget-conscious professionals
  • Secondary cases for less critical equipment
  • First hard case purchase

Custom Foam for Vault Cases

CutMyCase supports Pelican Vault models. Custom CNC-cut foam replaces the included pick-and-pluck foam with precision-fit cavities. It's one of the best upgrades you can make to a Vault case.
