Protecting Electronics in Extreme Heat and Cold

Temperature Is the Silent Killer

While drops and water get all the attention, temperature extremes damage more equipment than most people realize. LCD screens crack in cold. Batteries swell in heat. Sensor calibrations drift with temperature swings.

How Temperature Damages Equipment

Extreme Heat (Above 95F / 35C)

  • Batteries: Lithium-ion batteries degrade rapidly above 95F. Prolonged exposure above 140F can cause swelling, venting, or fire
  • LCD screens: Liquid crystals can permanently darken or develop dead spots
  • Adhesives: Heat softens glues used in lens elements, sensor assemblies, and display bonding
  • Plastic components: Housings and controls can warp or become brittle

Extreme Cold (Below 32F / 0C)

  • Batteries: Cold reduces battery capacity dramatically — a full charge may last 50% as long
  • LCD screens: Response time slows, and extreme cold can crack display glass
  • Mechanical parts: Lubricants thicken, making moving parts sluggish or stuck
  • Condensation: Moving from cold to warm environments causes condensation on and inside equipment

How Foam Helps

Thermal Insulation

Closed-cell foam is an excellent insulator. A 1-inch layer of polyethylene foam provides meaningful thermal buffering — slowing the rate at which equipment heats up or cools down.

A case with 1 inch of foam on all sides can keep interior temperatures within operating range for 2-4 hours even in extreme conditions. This gives you time to transport equipment between climate-controlled environments.

Condensation Prevention

The biggest thermal risk is condensation. When cold equipment enters a warm, humid environment, water condenses on every surface — including inside lenses and electronic enclosures.

Foam slows the temperature transition, reducing condensation severity. Combined with desiccant packs inside the case, foam insulation prevents most condensation issues.

Strategies for Hot Environments

Vehicle Transport

A car trunk in summer can reach 150F+. Never leave electronics in a hot vehicle longer than necessary. If you must:

  • Use a case with foam — the insulation buys you time
  • Park in shade when possible
  • Use a reflective windshield cover
  • Crack windows slightly for air circulation

Desert and Tropical Work

For extended outdoor work in hot climates:

  • Transport equipment in insulated cases until needed
  • Use a white or light-colored case — dark cases absorb more solar radiation
  • Include frozen gel packs in the case (wrapped in cloth to prevent contact moisture)
  • Allow equipment to acclimate gradually — don't take cold gear directly into sun

Strategies for Cold Environments

Winter Transport

Cold transport is less dangerous than heat if you manage the transition:

  • Keep cases sealed until you're in a warm environment
  • Allow 30-60 minutes for equipment to acclimate before opening
  • Use hand warmers near batteries (not touching) to maintain some warmth
  • Carry spare batteries in an inside pocket close to your body

Arctic and Mountain Conditions

For extreme cold work:

  • Use higher-density foam (more thermal mass = better insulation)
  • Consider foam-lined cases inside an insulated outer bag
  • Keep batteries warm until the moment of use
  • Avoid breathing on cold optics — moisture freezes instantly

Desiccant Packs

Always include silica gel desiccant packs inside sealed cases, especially when dealing with temperature transitions. A standard case needs 1-2 standard packs. Replace them when the indicator changes color (usually from blue to pink).
